Are you planning to swim a lot this summer? This is a great way to cool off on a sweltering day. Of course, many of our canine pals also love the water. Here, a Marietta, GA vet discusses swimming with Fido.
Swim Lessons
Some dogs take to water naturally, while others must learn how to swim. If your pet falls into the latter category, take time to show him. Don’t throw Fido into the water: this may just terrify him. Support his weight by holding him, and encourage him with praise and ear scritches.
Pool
Whenever you take Fido to a pool, immediately show him where the stairs are. This is very important! You want to be sure your furry buddy can get out of the water if he accidentally falls in when no one is looking. Take enough time with this to ensure that your dog really remembers. You may also want to put a visible landmark near the stairs. Another option is to buy doggy stairs, which you can hang off the side of the pool.
Beach
Some of our canine friends absolutely love going to the beach! Before taking Fido to the shore, make sure that he is microchipped, wearing ID tags, and current on vaccines and parasite control. Avoid areas with strong currents or heavy wakes, and keep a close eye on your pup.
Water
This may be easier said than done, but try not to let your pooch drink from pools, lakes, or streams. Make sure Fido always has plenty of fresh water.
Fur
Once swim time is over, rinse Fido off to get the salt, sand, and/or chlorine out of his fur. You may want to brush him once he’s dried off.
Paw Care
Doggy paw pads are very delicate, especially when they are wet. Fido can get painful blisters by running around on hot surfaces after going swimming. Try to keep the pooch on soft ground. You can also use paw balm or wax to protect those furry feet.
Tips
Always put your pet’s safety first. Not all dogs are well-suited for swimming, so check with your vet before taking Fido for a swim. Also, never leave your pup unattended near water. If you have a pool, we recommend fencing it off when it isn’t in use.
