Preventative Care
Before letting Fido go on a playdate with his canine buddies, make sure he is current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. You definitely don’t want your furry pal picking up a dangerous disease, or coming home with some unwanted hitchhikers! Keep copies of your dog’s medical records with you, just in case there is an issue. Emailing scanned copies to your smartphone is an easy way to do this. Your pooch should also be microchipped and wearing current ID tags.
Choosing Fido’s Playmates
Before letting your furry friend off-leash, observe the dogs that are already at the park. If you see any dogs that are acting aggressive, or if you notice pooches that have not been neutered, you may want to come back another day. It’s always best if Fido and his buddies are similar in size, so try to choose parks that offer separate areas for big dogs and little dogs. Of course, if your dog has aggressive tendencies, he may not be a good doggy park candidate.
Training
All dogs should know at least the five basic commands of good doggy behavior, which are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Make sure Fido knows these crucial commands before bringing him to a doggy park.
Do’s And Don’ts

Be very discreet when giving your furry buddy treats and toys in the presence of other dogs, as this can cause jealousy and even start a tussle among Fido’s friends. If you bring snacks for yourself, avoid aromatic foods, such as cheeseburgers, that will smell enticing to dogs. Last but not least, always bring water for your pooch, and pick up after him before leaving.
