Have you recently adopted a kitten? If so, you are certainly in for some adorable moments. Baby cats are super cute! They’re also super frisky. Little Fluffy will be very interested in exploring her new domain, and figuring out what she can and can’t eat, play with, or sleep on. Your tiny little furball can get herself into quite a bit of trouble during these little adventures! Read on as a local Marietta, GA vet offers tips on getting through Fluffy’s terrible twos.
Kittyproofing
Kittens are basically tiny little balls of mischief. Your cute pet won’t know what is and isn’t safe for her, so you’ll want to do some kittyproofing. Remove or secure anything potentially dangerous, such as toxic plants; plastic bags, wrappers, and ties; wires and cords; medicine; household cleaners; automotive products; lawn/garden chemicals; and anything small or sharp. We also recommend keeping major appliances, such as dryers, closed when not in use. Ask your vet for more information.
Playtime Petiquette
One of the first things your kitten will do is try to figure out what all of those claws and teeth are for. Our furry pals are predators by nature, so your pet will also instinctively start working on her pounces. Don’t let little Fluffy practice her hunting skills on you! It may be cute when a kitten jumps on your feet, but this can lead to some very dangerous behaviors in adult cats. If your furball attacks you, blow in her face and/or say ‘No’ in a sharp tone. Then, just ignore her until she is ready to play nice.
Midnight Zoomies
Cats live by their own rules . . . and their own schedules. Your furball may snooze off while you are eating dinner, and decide to play ‘hall hockey’ with her favorite toy while you’re trying to sleep. You won’t have much luck telling little Fluffy to go to bed, so you may need to more or less trick her into going to sleep. Just before bedtime, tire your kitty out with a vigorous play session. Then, feed her a late dinner. If your kitten is full and tired, she’ll be much more interested in finding a napping spot than in pouncing on your toes.
