2022 is on the way out! New Year’s Eve is undoubtedly one of the most festive nights of the year. However, for our furry companions, it’s also often one of the scariest. You’ll need to take a few precautions to keep your beloved pet safe and sound. Read on as a local Marietta, GA vet offers some advice on New Year’s Eve pet safety.
Booze
Don’t let your four-legged buddy have any alcohol. Even small amounts can affect Fido and Fluffy’s blood pressure, blood sugar, and temperature. Larger quantities—which for dogs and cats, isn’t very much at all—can lead to seizures and even respiratory distress.
Party Favors
Many typical party favors, such as silly string, confetti, whistles, and small noisemakers, are dangerous to playful pets. Keep these things out of paws’ reach!
Play Time
Make time for a fun play session. If you give Fido and Fluffy a good workout, they’ll (hopefully) be tired out after, which can help keep them calmer if/when things get loud.
Precautions
Fireworks are pretty common on New Year’s Eve. The lights and noise terrify many pets, particularly dogs. When walking Fido, use a sturdy leash and keep a good grip on him. That way, if he gets spooked by a sudden noise, he’s less likely to break away from you. If your canine buddy has a yard to chase squirrels around in, bring him in before dark . Don’t leave your pooch outdoors unsupervised! As for Fluffy, just keep her indoors.
Safe Spaces
If you’re having people over, and/or expect your neighbors to get rowdy, put Fido and/or Fluffy in a quiet, comfy spot, such as a back room, with bedding, toys, and for pups, safe chews. Turn on a radio or TV to mask the noise.
Anxiety Busters
If your furry pal is naturally jumpy, you may want to look into calming products, such as pheromone products and, for dogs, calming shirts. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, and follow instructions to the letter.
