Did you know that Lazy Day is coming up on August 10th? While some of our canine pals are furry, four-legged bundles of energy, there are also quite a few of them that are basically barking, adorable couch potatoes. A local Marietta, GA vet lists some of the laziest pups below.
Big Lazy Dogs
Many larger dogs are a bit lacking in the energy department. Surprisingly, the Saint Bernard, renowned for his skill in rescuing people, is on the top of this list. The massive Bernese Mountain Dog is also pretty tired. (Given their size, this is probably a good thing.) Great Danes, Tibetan Mastiffs, and Newfoundland pups also make the list.
Small Lazy Dogs
While some small dogs are quite feisty and zoomy, others are more interested in chasing Z’s than chasing squirrels. The Pug is a perfect example of this. The Shih Tzu, once favored by Chinese nobility, has apparently also figured out that he doesn’t really have to do too much other than look cute and provide cuddles on demand. The Pekinese, French Bulldog, and Havanese are also very relaxed. Basset hounds are usually pretty unmotivated as well.
Brachycephalic Pups
If your canine pal is brachycephalic, it’s best to keep him calm and avoid overexerting him. These guys can lose their breath very easily. In fact, they are so prone to respiratory issues that there is now a growing concern about the ethics of breeding them. Because of their short air passages, they get out of breath very quickly, and may tap out after running just a few steps.
Senior Dogs
Fido may be pretty feisty and playful as a puppy, but by the time he reaches his golden years, he’ll be slowing down. Dogs don’t all age at the same pace: big pups grow older more quickly than small dogs do. However, any pooch that is technically a senior is probably more interested in napping than in vigorous activity.
Honorable Mention: Greyhound
Greyhounds are known for their speed, so it may be a bit of a surprise to find them on this list. To be fair, these guys do need vigorous workouts every day. However, once Fido has burned off his zoomies, he’ll probably sleep for the rest of the day.
