Do you have a small dog? If so, you may want to put a pawprint on your calendar for April 27th. It’s Little Pampered Dog Day! While we think pups of all sizes should be pampered, little dogs often get the five-star treatment. A Marietta, GA vet offers some do’s and don’ts of spoiling a pint-sized pooch below.
Food
People often love to pamper pets with food. It’s not hard to see why. Fido is super cute when he knows he’s getting a treat! Just be very careful with what you feed your furry friend. Many of our favorite foods are toxic to dogs. This includes garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocados; pitted fruits; and anything with xylitol. Because small dogs are so small, it doesn’t take much of a toxin to make them very sick.
Gear
We recommend using harnesses, rather than leashes, for little dogs. It’s too easy to accidentally choke small pups with collars!
Products
When shopping for Fido, always get things that are the right size for your pint-sized pal. Your canine buddy could hurt himself with toys or treats made for larger dogs!
Clothing
Little pups often get chilly on cold nights. In summer, your pet may enjoy a cooling vest. This is one area where you can really go all-out and pamper your canine friend. Just make sure that Fido’s outfits fit well, and aren’t tight or restricting. Avoid things with zippers, as well as items with dangling ropes or small pieces that Fido may try to eat.
Safety
Small breeds can hurt themselves jumping on and off furniture. Get pet ramps or stairs for Fido, to help him get around a bit easier.
Training
Don’t let Fido get away with bad behavior. Training is just as important for Pomeranians as it is for Labradors!
Dental Care
Small dogs also tend to have dental issues, such as overcrowding. Keep up with Fido’s dental care!
Doggy On The Go
Many people like to take smaller dogs around with them. If you do this, use a carrier with a hard shell. This will help keep Fido from getting jostled. Also, if you are out and about, remember to give your furry pal regular water and potty breaks.
