Toxic Items
Many common household items are dangerous for kittens. Remove or secure toxic plants, medicine, chemicals, lawn/garden products, pesticides, automotive products, and cleaning agents.
Appliances
Washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, freezers, and even toilets can be deadly to your tiny little explorer. Keep these things closed when not in use.
Strangling Hazards
Many kittens can’t resist batting at ropes or threads. Keep wires and cords out of the way, or treat them with taste deterrents. Remember to move or secure lamp cords as well. You don’t want your pet pulling a lamp down on herself!
Small/Sharp Objects
Our feline pals are fierce hunters, and instinctively try to improve their pounces. Don’t let your furball play with anything dangerous! Small or sharp objects, such as safety pins, beads, buttons, earrings, fishing tackle, and sewing needles, should all be stored out of paws’ reach. Offer little Fluffy lots of safe, suitable toys, to keep her entertained and out of trouble.
Holes
Make sure that your vents and ducts close securely and that your screens, doors and windows are kitten-proof. Little Fluffy could fall out a window, or squeeze out under your door!
Doors and Windows
Although you may not mind your furball going under the bed, you should block off openings behind and beneath cabinets, appliances, and other large pieces. Kittens can fit in some very tiny—and dangerous—spaces!
Litter and Toys
You’ll also need to take some precautions when shopping for little Fluffy. Avoid clay or clumping litters for now. Kittens are rather clumsy, and sometimes accidentally ingest litter. This can cause deadly intestinal blockages! Also, be careful with toys that incorporate strings or ropes. Put these away after each use, so your frisky little pet doesn’t get tangled up.
Supervise The Furball
Last but not least, keep a close eye on your pint-sized pal. Don’t sit down on a couch, bed, or recliner without making sure little Fluffy isn’t in or under it. Better safe than sorry!
