Celebrating Dogust: Shelter Dog Birthdays

Did you adopt your canine buddy from a shelter? If so, that’s great! We love seeing dogs get a second chance at happiness. You probably don’t know your pet’s exact birthday, but that’s ok. August 1st has been designated as Dogust, the official shelter dog birthday! Read on as a local Marietta, GA vet offers some great tips on getting your pup’s tail wagging on his special day.

Treats

A special snack is definitely on the agenda! Regular doggy snacks are fine, but you can also give your pup some cooked, plain meat, fish or chicken, without the skin, bones, or fat. Fido can also have a little bit of bacon or sausage on this special occasion, though in general you should limit these fatty foods. Doggy ice cream is another good option. You can buy it at many pet stores, or just make your own.

Toys

Toys are very important for dogs, as they benefit our canine pals both mentally and physically. Get Fido a few new playthings. If you want to save money, you can always make your pet’s toys. Look online for great DIY ideas.

Bed

Sleeping dogs are super cute, especially when they are dreaming! One of the best things you can do for your canine companion is to make sure he has a comfy bed to snuggle up in.

Puppy Playzone

Do you have a yard for Fido to run and play in? Make it more fun for your pet by adding some outdoor toys, like tug toys. Your furry friend may also enjoy having a kiddie pool to splash around in, or a sandbox to bury toys and treats in.

Training

Did you know that many dogs like learning new things? Training can help shy dogs build confidence. If your furry buddy needs a bit of help with his petiquette, or doesn’t know basic obedience commands yet, take time to teach him.

Photos

Take some adorable photos to commemorate this special day. We never get tired of seeing puppy ‘birthday’ pictures!

Love

Your loyal pet really wants nothing more than to spend quality time with you. Take your furry pal for a long walk, and then spend some time tossing a ball or stick for him.
