Health Check
If your furball used to be sweet, and has only recently started acting grumpy, schedule an appointment for a full veterinary exam. If Fluffy checks out, at least you know you have a cantankerous pet, rather than a sick one.
Toys
Make sure your kitty has lots of toys to take her aggression out on, as well as a good scratching post or cat tower. We also recommend playing with Fluffy regularly, using toys that you can control, like a wand toy or laser pointer. These will help your furball burn off her excess energy without using you as a giant cat toy. Also, make sure your furry grump has access to a window with a good view, so she doesn’t get bored.
Avoid Punishment
Never punish your furball for misbehaving, even if she pounces on your toes. Cats don’t understand punishment, so your feline buddy may not associate your behavior with her actions. This can leave Fluffy leaving confused, anxious, scared, or even more grumpy. You definitely don’t want that!
Let Kitty Choose Cuddle Time
Never, ever try to force attention on a cranky cat. Let your feline pal decide when it’s time to snuggle. If your pet doesn’t want to be petted or picked up, just let her be. Or, try just talking to Fluffy. Some cats do seem to prefer conversation to cuddles!
Offer Safe Spaces
Cats often become aggressive when they feel threatened. Offer Fluffy a good hiding spot in every room. Pet tents are great, but you can also use kitty condos or cat towers with enclosed levels. Even a spot under the bed or couch will work. The point is just to make sure your furball always has somewhere to go to if she is uneasy, so she never feels cornered.
