October has officially gone to the dogs: it’s Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! This is a great cause, and one we can wholeheartedly support. If you’re considering adopting a pooch from a shelter, read on for some great tips from a local Marietta, GA vet on adopting a shelter dog.
Spend Time With Fido
Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment, so you want to be sure you’re picking the pup that is right for you. Spend some time with your potential pet before making a final decision.
Be Prepared
Before you bring your canine buddy home, you’ll want to pick up some supplies. Fido will need bedding, toys, treats, dishes, a leash and collar, food, grooming supplies, and a crate. You’ll also want to check your fencing and make sure it’s secure. Last but not least, we also recommend doing some puppyproofing. Remove or secure dangerous plants; wires and cords; small and/or items; household and automotive chemicals; medicine; and plastic bags. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
Give Fido Time To Adjust
Being in a shelter is scary and stressful for Man’s Best Friend. Fido may sleep a lot as first, as he recuperates. He may also need time to get used to his new home. Spend lots of time with your new pet, but don’t force attention on him. Offering your furry pal toys and treats will help win his trust, and get that adorable tail wagging.
Visit The Vet
Although most shelter pets are spayed or neutered, and current on their vaccines and parasite control, you’ll still want to set up an exam with your regular vet. This will help get your pooch started out on the right paw in his new life, and set the stage for your furry friend’s veterinary care regimen.
Be Happy!
By adopting a shelter dog, you’ve done a wonderful thing, and given that one lucky pooch a new lease on life. This can be very rewarding feeling! As you start out on this beautiful journey of friendship with your new canine pal, give yourself a pat on the back! Share the joy and bring on the tail wags by giving your new furkid a special welcome-home treat, like a doggy cake.
