Camping With Fido

Are you planning to go camping this summer? Georgia has some truly breathtaking land. Your canine pal will definitely enjoy getting to spend some time in the Great Outdoors. Just be sure to put your pet’s health and safety first. A Marietta, GA vet discusses camping with Fido in this article.

Packing For The Pup

Make sure to bring everything your furry buddy will need on the trip. Your list should include toys, treats, food, bedding (unless you’re letting Fido stay in your tent), paw wax, towels, and a pet-first aid kit. You may want to get collapsible plastic doggy dishes, which are lightweight and easy to carry. Bring a doggy raincoat as well. If you’re going to be near water, your four-legged friend should also have a lifejacket.

Campsite Hazards

You may be surprised to learn how many things at campsites are hazardous for pets. You’ll need to watch for toxic plants, as well as wild animals. Trash is also a concern: your garbage may contain dangerous items, such as skewers, tin foil, bones, can lids, and unsafe foods. Be careful with campfires and grills, too. Keep Fido well away from flames and coals!

Training

Before taking your dog on a fun camping trip, make sure he knows—and obeys—basic obedience commands. Also, don’t let Fido explore dangerous areas, such as spots near steep hills or riverbanks, or places that could be housing wild animals.

Preventative Care

Your canine buddy should be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. Making sure Fido is wearing proper ID tags is also important. If your pooch is a puppy, small dog, senior, or has health issues, consult your vet before taking him along. Some pups will be more comfortable in a doggy hotel! Last but not least, cut your pet’s nails before your trip.

Water

Try not to let Fido drink from unknown water sources. The water may be contaminated! If you can’t bring water along, follow the same rules for your canine companion as you would for yourself: boil or treat it before using it.

Pup Check

Get into the habit of checking your furry friend thoroughly every day. You’ll want to look for ticks, as well as signs of injury.
