Bonding With Your New Cat

Have you recently adopted a kitty? Congratulations! Fluffy is certain to brighten up your life with her cute antics and lovable character. However, just like people, cats all have their own purrsonalities. Some kitties are friendly and cuddly, while others are more timid. If your new feline pal is shy or uneasy, read on! Here, a Marietta, GA vet offers tips on bonding with your new cat.

Let Fluffy Choose Cuddle Time

One of the golden rules of being owned by cats is that it is always up to the kitty to decide when it’s snuggle time. Your furball may very well decide she wants to cuddle when you’re in the middle of doing something, but that’s another topic. Never force attention on Fluffy.

Avoid Punishment

It is of course a huge understatement to say that cats don’t think like we do. However, it is important to realize that kitties don’t understand punishment. Never hit or yell at Fluffy: this may just frighten or confuse her. If your pet does something wrong, like scratching your sofa, startle her with a loud noise to discourage her. You can also try squirting your furball with water.

Create A Kitty Haven

It isn’t very hard to turn your home into a luxury mansion for a cat. Start by setting out lots of comfy beds and napping spots. Offering your pet a comfy window seat with a good view will help as well. Fluffy will appreciate some cat furniture, a good scratching post, and some pet-safe plants to nibble on. (Tip: check the ASPCA website for a list of suggestions.)

Veterinary Appointment

One of the first things you’ll want to do is set up an appointment for your kitty. We recommend scheduling a full exam for your pet. Making sure Fluffy is current on her vaccines and parasite control products is also important. If your cat hasn’t been microchipped and spayed or neutered yet, take care of that as well.

Building Trust

There are some things you can do to help earn your furball’s trust, and get her motor running. Offer your feline buddy toys and treats, and play with her daily. Also, just spend time with Fluffy: talk to her, pet her, and let her snuggle up with you at night if she wants.
